Jamar Howard’s Offseason Workout Plan

While wide receivers Eric Rogers (now in the CFL) and Douglas McNeil (now in the NFL) got the attention that comes with all the touchdowns last year, Jamar Howard was performing at a level rivaling them by the end of the 2014 season.

With those two gone to begin the season in 2015, Howard is now getting those end zone opportunities and putting up putting up numbers that compare favorably to last year’s top performers.

2014, Final 5 games Howard McNeil Other WRs combined
Receptions 39 40 42
Yards 558 443 412
TD 5 15 5

He also put in the work in the offseason to get himself ready to be the No. 1 receiver.

“My offseason was critical. I got in the best shape of my life, I lost 25 pounds – I just know my mind’s set on my ultimate goal, said Howard. “I worked my ass off to get to this point.”

Thunder Head Coach Mike Hohensee agreed: “He came in in tremendous shape. He really reinvented himself in the offseason; he wanted to be the guy we went to, and at this point, he is.”

The program was simple, consisting of a few simple steps:

  • Hit the weights. Howard had never considered that a priority before this offseason, and now he’s spending time in the weight room, shedding calories and maintaining muscle mass he’s gained.
  • Keep on schedule. Gone are the days where he’d be up late at night and make a run to McDonald’s or other fast food locations. Now he doesn’t eat after 10 p.m. and works on five smaller meals per day. He’ll have a cheat day here and there, but he’s “working out so much it doesn’t really matter.”
  • Cut the sweets. He also stopped eating candy and drinking soda. “I love drinking water now,” Howard said.
  • Run. From running routes while working out with quarterbacks Darron Thomas and Kyle Rowley to just plain running to build up cardiovascular endurance, he credits running with helping to keep him a step ahead of defenders, especially late in the game.

In addition to having the opportunity to “become unstoppable,” as Hohensee says, both Howard and Coach Hohensee have the same goal for Howard this season.

“I want him to be a champion,” said Hohensee. “I think he’s taken that to heart. Besides being a great receiver, he’s taken a leadership role. A lot of different issues have happened on and off the field with the team, ownership, whatever it is – he’s done a great job handling that. It’s a shame he’s not one of the captains, because he’s one of the guys that’s acting like one.”

For now, performing like a champion includes pushing himself harder than he’s ever pushed in practice, something that he sees his teammates doing along with him.

“I’m pushing myself in practice. I’m practicing a lot harder. I think we all do – we compete,” said Howard. “At practice, the defense doesn’t like us and we don’t like them. But when it comes time for the game, we’re all like brothers. We love each other.”

Howard leads the team with 114 yards receiving and three touchdowns after a star turn against the Los Angeles KISS. He also earned Highlight of the Week honors after catching a pass that sent him flipping over the wall in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. He’ll take the field hoping to exceed even that performance this Friday against the Tampa Bay Storm.

#ThunderTopPlay, New Orleans Final

Never give up. The 2014 Portland Thunder never did, and these two plays provide an example of the great things that happened because of that effort.

First, Eric Rogers fights off being wrapped up when he catches the ball and punches it into the end zone between two defenders that just can’t catch up.

Secondly, KC Obi gets deep on his assignment with one of the AFL’s top return men, Larry Beavers Jr taking it up the opposite side of the field. Obi shows why hesitation kills and comes out of nowhere to end the return.

Thunder Top Play, FLA Region 2 vs 3

Two great plays, both end up with Thunder players on the ground. Eric Rogers got there organically, flying over the wall to make a touchdown catch and landing in the VIP section. Great catch, great touchdown, everyone’s happy.

But there’s just so much more going on with this Crocker/Sonie play. First Crocker gets the INT and a big return. Then Michael Lindsay, as part of his THREE forced fumbles in the game, pops the ball out. Sonie chases it down and eventually corrals it, then turns around and finishes the return and ends it with a consummate Thunder Roll.

Which moves on – the classic AFL touchdown or the crazy one? You get to decide!

Thunder Top Play, NO region 1 vs. 4

Eric Crocker picked off the most passes for the Thunder. Eric Rogers scored the most touchdowns. That Crocker and Rogers would help the Thunder pull off their fourth win of the season is no surprise -Crocker’s pick-six started the game against the Voodoo off right for the defense, and Rogers’ final touchdown was the final offensive score of the game.

Thunder in the Offseason, Week 3

We continue to follow Thunder players in other professional leagues in the offseason – at this point it looks like former Thunder linebacker T.J. Fatinikun is the only player who will be playing this weekend, as he’ll take the field for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Eric Rogers made a strong case for a spot on the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders’ playoff roster, catching four passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns. With two games played for Calgary, he’s tied for fourth on the team with those two touchdown receptions. The Stampeders finished with the best record in the league, so they’re on a bye this week as Edmonton and Saskatchewan battle to see who’s going to play them in the Western Final.

Douglas McNeil continues to enjoy his time in Denver, though he remains on the practice squad and will not play tomorrow.

Here’s the schedule for games involving Thunder players’ teams this weekend:

  • Tampa Bay @ Washington: 10 a.m., FOX
  • Denver @ St. Louis, 10 a.m., CBS

2014 Thunder Top Play, Day 5: Rogers vs. Rogers

Eric Rogers had a pretty average game for him against New Orleans, picking up 74 yards and four touchdowns (actual average: 100 yards and three touchdowns). However, that doesn’t mean these touchdown plays were average. Unlike Solomon’s 8 seed touchdown, Rogers wasn’t ever actually down on his “Pt. III” run.

Which of Rogers’ touchdowns tops the other?

Thunder in the Offseason, Pt. 2

Douglas McNeil III hauls in a pass at Denver Broncos practice.
Douglas McNeil III hauls in a pass at Denver Broncos practice last week.

A few former Portland Thunder players are  making an impact in other leagues as well.

WR Eric Rogers got his first CFL action a couple of weeks ago, catching five passes for 72 yards (second-most on the team), helping Calgary notch its 14th win of the season. Unfortunately for those tuning in to see him last week, he wasn’t active for that game – however, it seems as though he’s going to be starting at WR again for the Stampeders this week.

Former LB T.J. Fatinikun is still on the active roster with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Douglas McNeil III continues to participate on the Denver Broncos’ practice squad.

Here’s this week’s schedule for their new teams for those who want to keep up with  their exploits!

  • Calgary at BC: Sat., Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. PDT. (ESPN3)
  • Tampa Bay vs Atlanta: Sun., Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. PST. (FOX)
  • Denver at Oakland: Sun., Nov. 9 at 1:05 p.m. PST. (CBS)
